Over the last few months, we have enjoyed 3 social events plus a weekend away in Ambleside (see latest newsletter for latter).

The first social event was in early January when 21 of us had a very enjoyable evening at the Italian restaurant, Pinocchio’s in Ashton. We had the upstairs room to ourselves and the 3 course meal was great value, with the staff providing an excellent service. The general feedback was that the restaurant is worthy of a return visit in the not too distant future.

The 2nd social event took place on 20th March, when 10 of us attended Roaches Lock in Mossley for a 3 course meal. Again, the food was excellent and good value, although they ran out of beef and ale pie (the alternative pies were adequate replacements). A good night was had by all.

Finally, on 24th June, the annual BBQ was attended by 16 members at the Summers’ house, where some interesting drinks and good food were consumed! The weather stayed fair until about 9.30. Hopefully, the BBQ will take place again next June.

We had a walk on Saturday 8th July where we finished with a meal at the local pub. 7 of us had decent food at the Pack Horse in Birtle near Bury. Hopefully, this will be repeated after other Saturday walks (if any members have any suggestions, please let me know)

On 19th August. Karen is arranging a blue plaque walk in Manchester followed by a meal in a Chinese restaurant. The walk starts at 2pm with the meal in a central Manchester restaurant at 5.30pm Details are in the latest walk programme.

On the weekend of 21st October, we are booked into Hartington Youth Hostel. This will include 2 walks, excellent food and accommodation plus draught beer from the local brewery. We had a weekend there in 2014 and it was not only our first weekend away, but a very enjoyable one. We have provisionally done a group booking for 16 people and, currently, we have commitments from 15, so there is still 1 place available (more can be added if accommodation remains available). The weekend includes evening meal on the Saturday and Sunday breakfast.

Also by the time you read this, we will have more details about the proposed walking trip in China, which will take place in November 2018. When we have confirmed accommodation, flights, injections, visas, etc, we will be sending round details. Karen has already visited China to check accommodation and walks (expenses claim in the post, John!).

We will be looking at scheduling more social events round Christmas. This will probably include the pre Christmas meal at Wetherspoon in Glossop and possibly tapas at the Sportsman in Hyde in the new year. If anyone has other ideas for social events, please get in touch.
